Traditional Kerala volumetric measuring units — Para, Idangazhi , and Nazhi
Nazhi – 200 g to 250 g of rice (Smallest Unit): The smallest traditional measuring unit, approximately 200 g to 250 g of rice. Today, it is mainly used for decorative purposes and ritual offerings.
Idangazhi / Edangazhi (Medium Unit): Equal to 4 Nazhi, this medium-sized vessel is traditionally made of wood. It measures approximately 800 g to 1.36 kg of rice and is commonly used for home décor and auspicious occasions.
Para (Largest Unit): The largest measuring unit, equal to 10 Idangazhi or 40 Nazhi. It holds approximately 8 kg to 13.6 kg of rice and is widely used for Nirapara ceremonies, wedding décor, and temple rituals. When these vessels are filled to the brim—known as Nirapara—they symbolize prosperity, abundance, and good fortune. They play an important role in Hindu weddings, housewarming ceremonies, and festivals such as Onam and Vishu.
